Spatial distribution of photoexcited electrons in sandwich structures

Abstract
The spatial distribution of photoexcited electrons along the normal to the film plane of an illuminated metal‐insulator‐metal sandwich structure has been calculated for various thicknesses of the electrodes using a computer. For very small thicknesses (≲ 100 Å, depending on the optical constants of the electrodes) the number of excited electrons does not follow the commonly used exponential law because of the strong contributions due to the multiple reflections and interference of the light waves within the structure. In some cases the excitation in the not directly illuminated electrode can become even stronger than in the directly illuminated one.
