Abstract
In discussing functional uterine bleeding the author reviews the existing difficulties in theory and treatment of this syndrome. Estrogens are considered of major importance in the causation and treatment of functional bleeding. Whenever the estrogenic level fluctuates with relationship to other hormones, the rhythmic normal bleeding becomes increased, irregular or absent as the case may be. Large doses of diethylstilbesterol are used to check the immediate bleeding. The cyclic use of small doses of diethylstilbesterol in the 1st half of the period and anhydrohydroxy progesterone in the second half of the period are used to prevent a recurrence of the irregular bleeding. This artificial cyclic therapy may be of benefit, until the normal ovarian pituitary balance has spontaneously reestablished itself. Most cases of irregular bleeding except those in the menopausal group are considered temporary secondary ovarian failures. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
