Spectrum of Nonpuerperal Galactorrhea: Report of Two Cases Evolving Through the Various Syndromes1

Abstract
Unphysiologic lactation with amenorrhea is a poorly understood disorder which is further confused by loosely applied eponyms. This report details the clinical course of 2 patients who manifested symptoms of the various accepted syndromes of inappropriate lactation and subsequently developed Cushing's syndrome with enlargement of the sella. Chromophobe adenomas were removed from both patients, with resolution of lactation and Cushing's syndrome. These cases demonstrate both the importance of prolonged follow up of abnormal lactation and the artificiality of the present eponymic classification. It is suggested that lactation associated with Cushing's syndrome is indicative of an underlying pituitary tumor, even in the absence of sellar enlargement.
