Mobilities and Longitudinal-Diffusion Coefficients of Mass-Identified Positive Ions in Carbon Monoxide Gas

Abstract
We have measured with a drift-tube mass spectrometer the mobilities of CO+, CO+·CO, and C+ ions in carbon monoxide gas at 300 °K. The measurements were made over a substantial range of EN, where E is the drift-field intensity and N is the gas number density. Zerofield reduced mobilities were determined for CO+·CO and C+ ions. Their values are 1.90 ± 0.03 and 2.7 ± 0.1 cm2/V sec, respectively. Measurements were also made of the longitudinal-diffusion coefficient of CO+ ions in CO at 300 °K as a function of EN.
