Abstract
After a short recall of the mechanism which leads to the formation of the carbonaceous meso- phase, some physical properties of this material will be reviewed. In the second part, we would like to show in what way the synthesis of disc-like molecules provides systems which exhibit a fluid nematic phase very similar to the carbonaceous mesophase. Finally, all the results concerning disc-like systems allow us to propose a general classification of the disc-like systems. Keywords
