A comparison of organochlorine insecticide contents in specimens of maternal blood, placenta, and umbilical‐cord blood from stillborn and live‐born cases

Abstract
Hexachlorocyclohexane (.alpha.-, .beta.- and .gamma.-HCH), aldrin, p,p''-DDT, p,p''-DDD and p,p''-DDE were quantified in specimens of maternal blood, placenta and umbilical-cord blood from women experiencing stillbirth and live birth. Specimens of stillbirth cases had higher organochlorine insecticide contents as compared to matched controls. Levels of aldrin and p,p''-DDT in all the 3 specimens of stillbirth cases differed significantly from the controls. A significant correlation was noticed between maternal blood and placenta for total HCH, lindane (.gamma.-HCH) and p,p''-DDT while in the cases of maternal blood and umbilical-cord blood, aldrin, p,p''-DDT and total DDT were significantly correlated. Findings are discussed on the basis of experimental evidence in animals and in humans.
