Abstract
The synthesis and turnover of proteins in aorta, uterus, tendon and skin were studied in 5-week-old rats by following the incorporation of C14-lysine into these structures and its later disappearance from them. Proteins were fractionated by a modification of Lowry''s method and both protein content and radioactivity were determined in the several fractions. The maximum specific activity of connective tissue proteins in a decreasing order of magnitude were nonscleroprotein, soluble collagen, insoluble collagen and elastin. Among the tissues studied, greatest synthesis and turnover of collagen was observed in the uterus, while skin, aorta and tendon followed in descending order as named. Keywords
