Abstract
The incidence of factitial proctitis and the severity of the lesions have decreased (10 per cent) in the reported group of patients, compared with the previously-studied group at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. The only changes in the treatment have been the methods of application and anchoring the radium with the patient under general anesthesia and copious vaginal packing. The success of treatment of this condition with daily instillations of hydrocortisone retention enemas far surpassed that of treatment with the placebo in our double-blind study, and it was superior to the topical application of steroid in suppositories. Treatment was continued until considerable improvement was evident proctoscopically. The average duration of treatment was two to three months. No intestinal or septal perforation occurred in the study group, nor was any diversionary procedure (colostomy) necessary. However, we feel that close proctoscopic follow-up examinations at monthly intervals are mandatory when this treatment regimen is used. Keywords
