Abstract
The activity of streptomycin was not changed in the presence of fresh whole blood or serum when tested with a sensitive strain of Staphylococcus aureus. No enhancement of streptomycin activity was noted even when immune serum was added to the blood. Growth of a resistant strain of S. aureus was inhibited during the first 24 hrs. by streptomycin in concs. far < inhibitory cones., and this effect was augmented when serum or blood was present. Growth curves indicated that this inhibition was a direct interference with bacterial metabolism rather than combination with or inactivation of labile constituents in the medium. The bactericidal and bac-teriostatic activity of streptomycin are dissociated phenomena. Keywords
