Abstract
We present modified forms of some approximations of the cluster variation method (CVM). The modifications are based on a new interpretation of the CVM, which indicates how to improve approximations without increasing the cluster size. Numerical comparisons of original and modified approximations show that the modifications can result in a significant increase in accuracy. Keywords
