Abstract
To the Editor: We believe that the paper by Vadheim et al. (Nov. 20 issue)* on preferential transmission of diabetic alleles in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) contains a fundamental flaw in its design, which invalidates the use of the data. We are also unable to replicate the results of the statistical analysis.Concerning the data, we do not understand the inclusion in Tables 1 and 2 of data on affected children. It is not surprising to find segregation distortion of DR3 and DR4 in affected offspring because of the well-known association of IDDM with DR3 and DR4. Ascertainment bias is . . .Keywords
