Abstract
Seventy autopsied cases from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner were studied comparing ethyl alcohol levels in blood and vitreous humor. Gas chromatography was the method of separation and quantitation employed in the study. There is a close correlation between levels of ethyl alcohol in the blood and the vitreous humor; a wider range of variation between the 2 exists at the higher values. In none of the cases is there a positive finding for blood which could not be confirmed in the vitreous humor. Vitreous humor is easily obtained from the eye and presents a new source of fluid for the determination of ethyl alcohol to the toxicologist and forensic chemist. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
