Abstract
The branching ratio for the formation of bound positronium atoms in nuclear pair formation is calculated. It ranges from ∼ in light nuclei to ∼ in heavier nuclei. This mechanism yields positronium atoms formed in vacuum, perturbed only by the nuclear Coulomb field, and should provide a reasonably copious source for experiments on the vacuum eigenstates.
