Abstract
The specificity of the neutral salt pump of the isolated rabbit gall bladder was studied with the following anions: acetate, HCO3[long dash], Cl-, DMO-, isethionate, lactate, pivalate, propionate, and SO4[long dash]. Each anion was tested in a bathing fluid containing its sodium salt in hypotonic Ringer solution (200 milliosmols/kg). Net ion and water fluxes and electrical PD were measured. Electrically neutral transport of Na+, the test anion and water was apparent with all mono-valent anion species tested, but little or no transport was observed with SO4[long dash]. Although probably specific with respect to Na+, it is concluded that electrically neutral salt transport by gall bladder epithelium is not specific with respect to the accompanying anion. This publication has 12 references indexed in Scilit:
