DETECTION AND ASSAY OF PROLACTIN BY THE LOCAL LACTOGENIC RESPONSE IN THE RABBIT

Abstract
SUMMARY: The assay of prolactin by the technique of mammary-intraductal injection in pseudopregnant rabbits was investigated both by subjective assessment of the lactogenic response and by estimation of the lactose synthesized locally in the glands. Factors affecting the response were studied. The threshold levels of prolactin needed to induce lactation in the rabbit were determined. Of the breeds investigated, New Zealand White rabbits were the most sensitive to lactogenic stimuli. However, no breed gave uniform results and the main obstacle to the routine application of the assay method is the inherent variability of the rabbits. Nevertheless, the assay does provide a useful semi-quantitative method for assessing the effects of prolactin.
