Abstract
THE two major hormones that regulate calcium homeostasis are parathyroid hormone and the active form of vitamin D3 (l,25-(OH)2D3).1 These hormones work in concert to mobilize calcium from bone and act separately to increase the reabsorption of calcium by the renal tubule (parathyroid hormone) and the absorption of calcium by the intestine (l,25-(OH)2D3). By stimulating the activity of the enzyme 1α-hydroxylase in the kidney, parathyroid hormone also enhances the production of l,25-(OH)2D3.
