Determination of temperature and plasma composition in a high-pressure CsI-Hg-Ar discharge

Abstract
A high‐pressure CsI‐Hg‐Ar discharge is investigated (mercury pressure 6 atm, ac current 3.5 A rms, diameter 16 mm). The electron density is derived from the profile of the Stark‐broadened Cs 5F‐5D line at 802 nm. The axis temperature is derived from the intensity of the self‐reversed Hg 7 3S‐6 3P lines at 546 and 436 nm. An average density of atomic Cs is obtained from optical absorption of the Cs 7P‐6S line at 459 nm. Furthermore, a simple model is made which calculates the density of the various species present from the temperature. Combination of the model calculation with the experimental results yields the plasma composition and the temperature distribution.
