Abstract
Thalassemia bone marrow was cultured in vitro. The mitotic activity of basophilic erythroblasts were increased but development into polychromatic erythroblasts was delayed. Differentiation of orthochromatic erythroblasts into erythrocytes was retarded in thalassemia major. A "cross" plasma expt. showed that abnormal proliferation and differentiation of thalassemic erythroblasts are inherent characteristics, not affected by the type of plasma in which the cells are cultured. Keywords
