Abstract
Through the action of phage lysates, antigens were transferred to or from 8 of the Salmonella sero-types known to contain 1, w phases. It was found that 2 genetically different forms of 1, w antigen were present in salmonellae, one of which functioned as phase 1 and the other as phase 2. In nature, the 1, w antigen of phase 1 always occurred in combination with typical phase 2 components and the 1, w antigens of phase 2 in combination with typical phase 1 antigens. The probably role of phages in the production of new serotypes in nature was discussed briefly. Keywords
