Abstract
A rapid and reliable method for the simultaneous determination of the percentage of narcotine, thebaine and papaverine in opium by an infrared method has been developed. Examination of the infra-red spectrum of the carbon tetrachloride solution of the dried chloroform residue from an acetic acid-water opium solution revealed a quantitative relationship between the absorbances at 1767, 1602 and 1160 cm.−1 and the concentration of narcotine, thebaine and papaverine. Keywords
