Abstract
The order parameters of a number of novel 2-aryl-l,4-naphthoquinone dyes dissolved in a mixed cyanobiphenyl-terphenyl nematic liquid crystal system (Type E43, B.D.H. Chemicals Ltd.) have been determined. Observed values range from 0.80 to 0.09, and can be interpreted qualitatively by consideration of the w-dipole moment and transition moment directions of the dyes calculated by the PPP-SCF-CI MO method. Keywords
