Abstract
The screening of the quark-confining force by the mechanism of vacuum polarization is considered in the context of a nonrelativistic model utilizing a linear confinement potential. It is shown that for a large range of the screening force (i.e., small mass of the exchanged quark) the eigenvalues and Regge trajectories deviate only slightly from those of the confinement force. A model calculation of the contribution to the total cross section of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons yields bumps similar to those observed. Keywords
