Abstract
Blood samples from 19 pregnant and 13 fetal Macaca mulatto were used to determine in vivo oxygen dissociation curves at 38 C. The curves are described in terms of a modification [oxygen pressure] of Hill''s equation resulting in a maternal n = 2.65 and PO250 7.40 = 32.9 mm Hg. The fetal n = 2.40 and PO250 7.40 - 17.4 mm Hg. The population of PO2 values calculated from the equations describing these curves for the pH range from 6.90 to 7.90 and the saturation range from 10 to 90% were significantly different for mother and fetus (P < 0.0005). Thus, this study confirmed in vivo the difference between the maternal and fetal oxygen dissociation curves of the Macaca mulatta that had been demonstrated in vitro. Further, the maternal and fetal in vivo oxygen dissociation curves resembled the in vitro curves previously reported. Nomograms are presented that are derived from the in vivo oxygen dissociation curves of maternal and fetal Macaca mulatto blood which relate PO2 (mm Hg), saturation (%), and pH.This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
