Abstract
Oxidative conversion of indoxyl or a substituted indoxyl into the corresponding indigoid dye is a chromogenic reaction suitable for application in cytochemical staining methods for the localization of cellular enzymes. The synthesis is described of a series of substituted indoxyl acetates for comparative testing as model chromogenic substrates for esterases, and for study of the potentialities of the general chromogenic principle. Keywords
