Abstract
Casimir effects are relevant to areas as diverse as quantum field theory, cosmology, high-precision spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms, forces between dielectrics and conductors, atom-surface interactions, and the wetting of surfaces, amongst many others. In this article the basic ideas and results are reviewed. The emphasis is on the basic physics of Casimir forces, but some applications are discussed. Keywords
