Abstract
The effect of chlorpromazine and reserpine on pituitary vasopressin release was determined in rats which were deprived of water and in rats which were injected with hypertonic saline. Chlorpromazine and reserpine inhibited pituitary vasopressin depletion under both types of dehydration procedures and did not alter the reaccumulation rate of pituitary vasopressin. Syrosingopine andSU 9064, analogues of reserpine which do not stimulate the adrenal cortices, did not inhibit vasopressin depletion. The administration of chlorpromazine to adrenalectomized dehydrated rats likewise did not inhibit vasopressin depletion. The possible mechanism for the neuropharmacological blockage of vasopressin release, including the role of the adrenal cortices, is discussed. (Endocrinology74: 889, 1964)Keywords
