Alterations in Cartilage in OsteoarthritisThe morphologic changes in joints affected by osteoarthritis were identified in writings of the Hunter brothers over 200 years ago.88 Over the intervening years, alterations in gross morphology were correlated with histologic changes, and the pattern now thought to be pathognomonic for this disorder clearly identified.
