Effect of Penicillin and Streptomycin on Bacterial Contamination of Chick Embryos Inoculated with Unfiltered Sputums

Abstract
Specimens of sputum from subjects suffering from various infections of the respiratory tract were ground in a sterile mortar with an equal volume of sterile physiol. saline and then centrifuged. 0.3 ml were then inoculated into hen''s eggs. The eggs were divided into 4 groups as follows: a) Controls, b) 500 U. of penicillin in 0.1 ml. injd. into the allantoic cavity, c) 500 U. streptomycin as in b, d) 500 U. streptomycin plus 500 U. penicillin. The combination allowed the greatest % of survivals (64) compared to streptomycin alone (50), penicillin alone (39) or the controls (6). This procedure is suggested for the recovery of viral agents from unfiltered secretions of the respiratory tract.
