Abstract
A krypton 85 desaturation method, based on the Fick principle, has been developed for the quantitative determination of cerebral blood flow. This is essentially a modification of the inert gas method of Kety and Schmidt. Cerebral blood flow values obtained by this method were similar to those reported by Lewis and associates for krypton 79 and nitrous oxide desaturation. The quantitative accuracy of the desaturation method will primarily depend on the length of time of saturation prior to the de-saturation study. Ten minutes of saturation in normal individuals is most likely adequate. In patients anticipated to have diminished cerebral circulation, saturation should at least be extended to 15 minutes and often to 25 minutes. Keywords
