A STUDY OF THE SURVIVAL AND FUNCTION OF HOMOGRAFTED THYROID TISSUE IN MEMBRANE FILTER CHAMBERS IN THE RAT1

Abstract
Thyroid tissue has been successfully homografted in Millipore diffusion chambers between rats that have been shown routinely to reject skin homografts. In such grafted animals, histological sections of chambers removed have revealed normal thyroid tissue and colloid-filled acini in 70% at 1 month and 44% at 4 months. Further corroborative evidence of functional viability has been based on a significant uptake of a tracer dose of iodine131 given prior to removal of the chambers, and on radio-autographs obtained. Problems relating to membrane thickness and to chamber breakage are discussed and the question of possible tissue adaptation to the host with the passage of time is raised.Keywords
