Contact Transmission of Rous Sarcoma

Abstract
In 2 experiments involving a total of 820 inbred White Leghorns, the transmission of Rous sarcoma virus under conditions of direct bird-to-bird contact, which resulted in Rous sarcomas of the subcutis, the skeletal muscle, and the viscera, has been observed for the first time. Diluted virus applied to open feather follicles caused tumors, suggesting a mode of transmission; however, this may not be the only one, since almost half of the contact-positive chickens had tumors in the viscera only.
