Abstract
Yeasts strains (43), isolated from the milk of 43 cows (almost always in pure culture) were identified following the method of Lodder and Kreger-van Rij. The strains most frequently found were Pichia farinosa, Candida parapsilosis and Saccharomyces fragilis Cryptococcus neoformans was diagnosed 3 times. Sufficient anamnestic data were available for 14 milks (only for one of the 3 containing C. neoformans). In 11 instances, typical yeast mastitis, either primary or secondary, was present. Cryptococcosis in one of these cases was confirmed by histological examination. On the basis of our observations, P. farinosa can be added to the agents causing yeast mastitis already mentioned in the literature. Owing to lack of capsule formation on artificial media, 2 of the 3 strains of C. neoformans were first mistaken for Torulopsis. However, when the urease reaction was later found to be positive, animal inoculations were carried out and the diagnosis corrected. Keywords
