Abstract
A general plan of exposure and dosimetry for a series of determinations of the relative biological efficiency, [eta], of 1000 kvp x-rays (HVL = 3.3 mm Pb) compared with 250 kvcp X-rays (HVL =. 0.6 mm Cu) is discussed in detail. Determinations are presented, based on the dose-survival curves of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, haploid and diploid, in the resting state. The values of [eta] (tissue dose) ranged from 0.86 to 0.89. When the ED50 of the haploid yeast was increased by 35%, the value of [eta] remained unchanged. For X-rays of 1.6 mm Cu HVL, the value of [eta] was unity (standard X-raybean, 0.6 mm Cu HVL). The standard error of [eta] was less than 0.03 in all the experiments with haploid cells.
