Abstract
The hind legs of Rana esculenta were perfused with Ringer phosphate solutions of different pH. The solutions contained the same amount of phosphate and varied only slightly in their sodium content, which was found to be without effect on the excitability of the muscles. The range of pH 5.6 to 7.6 was investigated. Acid solutions decreased and alkaline solutions increased the height of contraction in fatigued muscles when maximal stimuli were used. pH differences of .25 unit distinctly altered the response of the muscle to indirect stimulation with faradic shocks. In contrast to the earlier work it must be stated that the striated muscle is under favorable conditions just as sensitive to alterations in pH as is the smooth muscle.
