Abstract
Bacterium linens, strain 456, requires either pantothenate (PA) or p-aminobenzoate (PABA) for growth. Folic or folinic acid does not substitute for PABA except at very high concns. Biotin is not required but stimulates growth when either PA or PABA is present. Cells grown in the presence of PA contain PABA and those grown on PABA contain PA. The addition of biotin reduces the amt. of the added vit. (either PA or PABA) found in the cells. Growth in media containing PABA is inhibited by salicylate and sulfanilamide and reversed by PA, pantoate or biotin. Keywords
