Abstract
The resolution of a Fourier-transform spectrometer is limited by the maximum difference of optical path obtainable, the latter being determined by mechanical limitations, diffraction effects, or shadowing. A method has been proposed which would, in theory, overcome this limitation and permit excess signal-to noise ratio to be exchanged for improved instrument resolution by extending the interferogram function by means of expansion in terms of the prolate spheroidal wavefunctions. The extended interferogram function may then be processed in the conventional manner to obtain a measured spectral density of greater resolution than would have been possible by processing the original interferogram data. Keywords
