Abstract
Samples of 97 and 259 participants were asked to rate the relevance of possible satisfactions to their favorite free-time activity and to their work. The ratings were cluster analyzed and the results of the samples compared. Four dimensions replicated strongly—Intimacy, Relaxation, Achievement, and Power; two dimensions were ephemeral—Transcendence and Excitement; and five dimensions received moderate support but were not strongly replicated at this time—Novelty, Intellection, Sociability, Time Filling, and Constructiveness. Cluster scores were generated for leisure and work satisfactions separately and were correlated with other variables in order to assess the potential utility of the dimensions. Men and women differ only in satisfaction from Power. Work and leisure (regardless of what the activities were) differ in Relaxation and Intellection. Patterns of leisure satisfactions are shown to differ for selected leisure activities; and patterns of work satisfactions are shown to differ for selected occupations. Keywords
