Abstract
A semiempirical band structure for was obtained by adjusting the parameters in the mixed-basis band-structure interpolation scheme to obtain agreement between the calculated total density of states (DOS) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy data. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data collected from a (111) surface with a noble-gas-discharge lamp as excitation source were used to check the energies of the d bands. The band structure is compared to those of both elemental Pt and Au, and the gold color of is explained in terms of its Au-like DOS.
