Abstract
Pharyngeal and bronchial swabs were studied for culturable mycoplasma in 78 patients coming to bronchoscopy. Mycoplasma were isolated from 9 (11.5%) of the bronchial swabs; 5 of these were identified as Mycoplasma salivarium. In none of these subjects did the isolation 6T mycoplasma from the bronchial swabs appear to be related to the disease process; these isolations were more likely due to contamination of the bronchial swab with pharyngeal secretions. The absence of any mycoplasma isolations in 13 subjects with chronic bronchitis makes it unlikely that mycoplasma play any role in this disorder.
