Abstract
The leading divergences contributing to the lowest-order electromagnetic and weak effective Lagrangians are characterized in terms of the bilocal operators that emerge from light-cone algebras. Possible mechanisms for finite mass differences are discussed in this context. Speculations concerning finite electromagnetic mass differences correlate the small nonelectromagnetic isospin violation with the approximate chiral SU(2) × SU(2) symmetry of the strong-interaction Hamiltonian. Keywords
