Abstract
Large scale enzymic phosphorylations of D-ribose by means of a cell-free extract of ribose-grown E. coli were carried out in the presence of adenosine triphosphate. A biosynthetic pentose monophos-phate was isolated from the reaction mixture and partially purified. This biosynthetic material is almost certainly ribose 5-phosphate, as shown by the liberation of ribose after treatment with alkaline phosphatase, and by studies of reducing power, acid stability, periodate oxidation and rate of color development in the orcinol reaction. Keywords
