The Main Outlines of Bacterial Classification

Abstract
Following a discussion of the problems involved in the creation of the larger taxonomic units among the bacteria, an outline for more rational approach is presented. The kingdom MONERA is set up, composed of microorganisms without true nuclei, plastids, and sexual reproduction. It has 2 divisions. (I) Myxophyta[long dash]organisms photosynthetic with the evolution of O2 and possessing the typical green plant chlorophylls, phycocyanin. and sometimes phyco-erythrin, and colorless, non-photosynthetic counterparts recognizable as such; and (II) Schizomycetae[long dash]organisms not so characterized. Division I is not further subdivided here; Division II falls into 3 classes [long dash]1) Eubacteriae (three orders: Rhodobacteriales, Eubacteriales, and Actinomy-cetales), 2) Myxobacteriae (one order, Myxobacteriales), and 3) Spirochaetae (one order, Spirochaetales).
