Abstract
This is the first of two papers which present the fundamental concepts and terminology of acoustical scattering theory in a manner suitable for use by those involved in ultrasonic tissue characterization. This first paper deals with scattering by single objects and the second, which will appear in a future issue, with scattering by collection of objects. Keywords
