Abstract
Admn. of thiouracil to the rat causes decreased output of ACTH and subsequent atrophy of the adrenal cortex. Similar treatment in White Leghorn cockerels (0.1% daily diet of thiouracil from 10-39 days of life) resulted in smaller chicks as contrasted with normal controls, but the adrenals in the exptl. chicks were relatively almost twice as heavy. Cockerels thyroidectomiz -ed before 5 days and autopsied at 42 showed a similar decrease in absolute wt. but increase in relative adrenal wt. The mechanism of this increase in adrenal wt. under these exp. conditions is not understood, but, contrary to the condition in the rat, there is no interrenal atrophy. Keywords
