The Chondrocalcific Arthropathy of Iron Overload

Abstract
Three patients with the chondrocalcific arthropathy of hemochromatosis had well documented iron overload as well as a chronic arthritis of the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints in association with chondrocalcinosis. Two of the patients with advanced degenerative changes in the hips had the clinical features of hemochromatosis, whereas the third patient had none of the clinical manifestations of hemochromatosis except arthritis. These patients illustrate that hemochromatosis may be associated with a characteristic and potentially disabling arthropathy, the true nature of which may be overlooked. Further-more, an awareness of the association of a chondrocalcific arthropathy with iron overload can lead to a diagnosis of hemochromatosis before other clinical manifestations of the disease arise.
