Abstract
The full equations for stresses and displacements around a central crack, in an infinite plate subjected to uniaxial and biaxial tension, are determined using the Westergaard stress function. These are compared quantitatively with the usual approximate forms, in order to assess the range of validity of the latter for use in experimental measurements of stress intensity factors. Keywords
