Abstract
None of 8 normal rabbits subjected to unilateral nephrectomy developed hypertension. Seven of 14 rabbits with unilateral renal hypertension (i.e., hypertension due to the manipulation of only one kidney or its blood supply, without removing the other kidney) showed a persistence of hypertension for some time after removal of the "ischemic" kidney. Perhaps this persistence of hypertension is due to an overstraining or "dulling" of a blood pressure regulatory mechanism, or it might be due to indirect effects, such as damage to the unmani-pulated kidney or widespread vascular damage.
