Abstract
Using a set of gauge-invariant variational trial wave functionals, we investigate the nature of the (2+1)-dimensional QED ground state. Our variational treatment is a refinement of the usual one-loop calculation. We find that for massive fermions the state with a constant magnetic field lies below the perturbative ground state. Finally, we use our method to study the massless Dirac equation in an external magnetic field. Keywords
