Abstract
New cytological data about 30 species of calyptrate Diptera, plus published information concerning 100 other species, is summarized under headings mitotic 2n chromosomes, meiotic n in testes, sex chromosomes, karyotype formulae, TCL in [mu], and authorities. Of the species listed 122 have 2n = 12 chromosomes, six have 2n = 10, one has 2n = 13 in males and 14 in females and one has 2n = 19 or 20. Sex chromosomes of species seem more variable than the autosomes in most families. Preliminary analysis of total complement lengths of 102 species suggest that karyo-types are shortest in the Cuterebridae, Hypodermatidae and Techinidae; of intermediate length in the Oestridae, Scatophagidae,Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae; and longest in the Muscidae where the 2n = 12 karyotypes are longer than the 2n = 10 ones. This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
