Abstract
Model configuration interaction calculations of the strong interaction between 3s3p6 2S and the 3s23p4nd2S series in Ar II are presented. It is shown that in a CI calculation of this problem the highest eigenvalue has no physical significance. The eigenvector corresponding to the highest eigenvalue has a large contribution from 3s3p6 2S. It is shown that this is the reason that earlier calculations by other workers have predicted an intensity distribution among the satellites which does not agree with observations. The present calculations give good agreement with the observed photoelectron satellite intensity distribution but it is conjectured that a definitive calculation must include the effect of the epsilon d2S continuum.
